2009 NAWIRA U19 Championship

2008 Cayman TeamReigning champions, Cayman Islands will play host to the 2009 NAWIRA U19 Championships, between July 4th - 11th 2009.

The Cayman Islands will start the tournament as favourites to retain their crown, having played in the 2009 Junior World Trophy in Kenya, in April 2009.

However, as witnessed on so many occasions, the form book often goes by the way side at the U19 level. In previous years, the NAWIRA tournament has generated many an upset and some surprise packages.

In 2008, Jamaica, a dominant U19 force in the Caribbean for many a year and 2007 winners, were firm favourites to succeed again, only to be outplayed by Mexico, a team playing in only their second international tournament. Likewise Cayman, an outsider in 2008, pulled off a famous 21-13 victory over Guyana, the latter, a team that annually contested the final.

Trinidad & Tobago will be looking to build on their recent successes in the senior men's & women's 15 a-side tournaments. Both Bermuda and Bahamas are expected to field international U19 teams for the first time, which will add an "unknown" factor to the tournament. With the winners prize a ticket to the 2010 Junior World Trophy, the tournament will be hotly contested and should not fail to disappoint.
